Introduction:
UL 1703 Ed.3, also known as the third edition of Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Standard 1703,
is a set of guidelines and requirements for safety testing and certification of photovoltaic (PV) modules.
It provides manufacturers, installers, regulatory authorities, and customers with a comprehensive
framework to ensure that PV modules meet strict safety standards.
History and Developments:
The first edition of UL 1703 was published in 1994, with subsequent updates and revisions over time.
Ed.3, the most recent update released in September 2020, represents a significant milestone in the
evolution of PV module safety standards. It incorporates advancements in technology, materials, and
critical test methods, keeping pace with the ever-changing PV industry.
Key Requirements and Testing Procedures:
UL 1703 Ed.3 establishes stringent requirements for various aspects of PV module design, construction,
performance, and durability. These include, but are not limited to, fire resistance, impact strength,
electrical insulation properties, resistance to environmental factors (such as humidity, temperature,
and UV exposure), and long-term reliability. In order to obtain certification, manufacturers must
undergo extensive testing by accredited laboratories to ensure compliance with these requirements.
