What is ISO 11898 3 ?

ISO 11898 defines the physical and data link layers of the CAN protocol. The physical layer outlines the electrical specifications, such as voltage levels, signaling rate, and connector pin assignments, while the data link layer deals with frame formatting, error detection, and acknowledgement mechanisms. The protocol also introduces concepts like bit stuffing and acknowledgment fields, which facilitate reliable and efficient data transfer.

ISO 11898 is a widely used communication protocol in the automotive and industrial sectors, providing a robust and reliable method for transmitting data between electronic devices in a network. The protocol is based on a two-wire twisted pair cable, where one wire carries the high voltage level (dominant) and the other carries the low voltage level (recessive). This differential signaling allows for noise-free transmission and ensures data integrity.

ISO 11898 also establishes the rules for message transmission, reception, and arbitration, enabling multiple ECUs to communicate effectively and avoid data collisions. Additionally, it defines the bit stuffing and acknowledgment fields, which facilitate reliable and efficient data transfer.

ISO 11898 is an essential standard for the design and implementation of CAN systems. It ensures that the CAN system operates reliably and efficiently, providing a robust method for transmitting data between electronic devices in a network. By following the guidelines and requirements defined by ISO 11898, manufacturers can design and implement CAN systems that meet their specific needs and requirements.
